Get the reporting your leadership team is asking for — and the data foundation your next ERP decision depends on. In two to three weeks, fixed fee.
The situation most Dynamics GP organizations are in
Microsoft’s mainstream support for Dynamics GP ends December 31, 2029. Every partner in the market is telling you to plan a Business Central migration.
Meanwhile, your CFO still can’t get a current receivables picture without waiting for month-end. Two departments report revenue differently. Someone maintains a critical spreadsheet that nobody else understands. And the question “what happens to twenty years of GP history?” keeps stalling the migration conversation before it starts.
Those are not separate problems. They are the same problem, and solving it is the cheapest, fastest thing you can do this year — with or without a migration decision.
That is what this assessment does.
This is for you if
- Month-end close and reporting take longer than they should, and most of the work happens in Excel
- Leadership asks questions your current GP reports cannot answer without a custom build
- Different teams produce different numbers for revenue, margin, or outstanding balance
- You have Power BI licenses but no meaningful adoption
- You are evaluating Business Central and want to de-risk it before committing budget
- You are being asked about AI and Copilot, and you suspect your data isn’t ready
- You run multiple GP company databases and consolidated reporting is painful
What we assess
1. Reporting reality What leadership actually needs, what they get today, and the gap between them. We inventory your existing SmartLists, Management Reporter designs, SSRS reports, and recurring spreadsheets — including which ones nobody has opened in the last year.
2. GP data structure Your company database configuration, account framework and segments, open versus historical table usage, fiscal calendar setup, and the specific joins and pitfalls that determine whether a Power BI model will be trustworthy or subtly wrong.
3. Business definitions How your organization defines revenue, an active customer, margin, outstanding balance, and fiscal period — and where those definitions currently conflict across departments.
4. Surrounding systems The CRM, operational applications, and spreadsheets that hold information GP was never going to cover, and what it would take to bring them into the same reporting layer.
5. Readiness for what’s next What your current data foundation means for a Business Central migration, for Microsoft Fabric, and for any practical use of Copilot or AI agents.
What you get
KPI & Business Definition Register A documented, agreed set of the metrics your leadership team runs on, with owners and calculation logic. This is the artifact that survives every system change you make from here.
GP Data Structure & Readiness Findings A written assessment of your GP environment from a reporting and analytics perspective, including the specific structural issues that will affect any Power BI, Fabric, or migration work.
A working Power BI dashboard Not a mockup. One real, connected subject area — receivables and cash by default — running against your GP data, in your tenant, that your finance team can use the day we finish.
Findings & Recommendation Report What to fix, what to build, what to leave alone, and in what order. Includes effort and cost ranges, and a clear position on how this affects your Business Central timeline.
Executive readout A working session with your leadership team to walk through findings and agree on the next step.
How it works
Week 1 — Discovery Stakeholder interviews with finance, operations, and IT. Reporting inventory. Read-only access to your GP environment.
Week 2 — Analysis and build Data structure assessment, KPI definition workshops, and development of the initial Power BI dashboard.
Week 3 — Findings and readout Dashboard handoff, written recommendation, and executive presentation.
Your time commitment: approximately six to eight hours total, spread across your finance, operations, and IT stakeholders. We do not run a three-month transformation study.
This is not for you if
- You have already signed a Business Central implementation contract and started design. At that point, this work belongs inside the project, not before it.
- You want a full enterprise data warehouse designed and built. This assessment tells you whether you need one — it doesn’t deliver one.
- You are looking for a free proof of concept. This is a paid engagement, and the deliverables are yours regardless of whether you do further work with us.
- Nobody in your organization can commit to agreeing on KPI definitions. That decision is the point of the engagement and it cannot be outsourced.
Investment
Fixed fee, scoped after a 30-minute conversation. Pricing depends primarily on the number of GP company databases, the number of stakeholder groups, and whether non-GP systems are in scope.
There is no ongoing commitment. Every deliverable is yours to keep and to hand to any partner you choose.
Why DStrategyTech
We are a Michigan-based Microsoft partner working across Data & AI, Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and Cyber Security. That combination matters here: assessing GP reporting properly requires understanding the ERP data model, the analytics platform, and the migration path at the same time.
We are not trying to sell you a migration you are not ready for. We have written publicly about why reporting is often the right first move for GP organizations, ahead of a migration decision — and this assessment is how we put that into practice.
Common questions
Do we need to commit to a Business Central migration? No. This assessment is deliberately independent of that decision. In many cases it makes the decision easier to defer with confidence rather than easier to make.
Will this disrupt our GP environment? No. We work with read-only access. Nothing we do changes GP configuration, data, or day-to-day operations.
We already have Power BI. Isn’t this redundant? Owning the licenses is common. Having a trusted, governed model built on GP data with agreed definitions is rare. Most environments we assess have several disconnected reports built by different people against different assumptions.
What if we’re on an older version of GP? That is normal and it does not prevent this work. Version does affect certain reporting options, and we identify those implications as part of the assessment.
Does this cover AI readiness? Partially, and honestly. The KPI definitions and data structure work in this assessment are prerequisites for any credible AI or Copilot use case. If you want a dedicated AI adoption assessment across the broader business, that is a separate engagement and we will tell you which one you actually need.
